Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Worldwide sonographers of all modalities suffer an epidemic, up to 90%, on-the -job pain/injury rate.  30% of those folks become debilitated and become disabled  or forced to make  a career change. The purpose of this presentation will demonstrate to sonographers correct exercise/stretching technique using  proper movement patterns. Optimized movement patterns as related to the body and the type of work, ultimately decrease injury and give you the ability to work pain free.  Methodology: Discussion on  how work induced sonographer pain/injury occurs. What are the biomechanics of pain/injury. Demonstration of proper   corrective exercises choice and technique to increase career longevity.  ‘Corrective’ exercise, is not the same as ‘fitness’ exercise. Corrective exercise and a gym workout are dissimilar. The differences and similarities explained. Correct movement patterns lead to dramatically reduced  injury and career longevity. Demonstration on  corrective Training Principles and Techniques. Training Protocols Corrective exercises for problem areas: Shoulders/Neck, Arms/Wrist, Lower Back, Hips, Legs, Focus on areas for corrective movement. How to implement a corrective program into your routine. Simple stretches and exercises that can be done anywhere. Findings:  ‘Corrective Movement’ stretching and exercise allows the body to be trained to withstand the rigors of what you ask it to do.  Conclusion: Sonographers worldwide suffer from an epidemic rate of on-the-job pain/injury.  There are practical, implementable solutions to allow a sonographer to continue doing their job for years to come.  ‘Movement Training’ combined with proper ergonomics is the solution.
